 Scalability is one of the biggest issues with Ethereum, which was sacrificed in favor of security and decentralization.  This is where Layer 2 solutions enter the picture.  They address the scalability issue by constructing execution layers on top of Ethereum  to allow the network to handle more transactions while utilizing the security and decentralization infrastructure of Layer 1.
 Today we examine Optimism, the sixth largest chain by total value locked, one of the most  well-like Layer 2 blockchains.  So let’s start with what is Optimism.  Optimism is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum, which aims to offer super-fast transactions  at a small fraction of the cost.  It aims to advance Ethereum’s vision of decentralization by creating a transparent  and long-lasting blockchain for the benefit of everyone.
 Optimism is built on top of the  Ethereum architecture. As a result, it is equivalent to the Ethereum virtual machine,  in short EVM, and serves as a basic addition to the main Ethereum layer.  Developers and cryptocurrency users can gain from quick transactions at a low cost, while still taking advantage of Ethereum’s security in this way.
 Optimizr is currently working on a platform called Superchain to increase its scalability even further.  Superchain is a network of chains built on the OP stack that combines its OP mainnet  with other Layer 2 chains.  As a Superchain, Optimism seeks to build an ecosystem that is modular and interoperable  in order to make the integration of Layer 2s easier.
 Okay, now let’s move on and look how exactly does Optimism work.  Rollups are used by Optimism to process transactions in batches, lowering network load and gas  costs.  This feature can help users save up to 100 times the gas fee.  Rollups combine hundreds of layer 1 transactions on Ethereum into a single transaction.
 The gas fee is split among all the users because a bundle contains multiple transactions.  Final transaction data is posted to Ethereum’s Layer 1 for processing, while the rollup is carried out on Optimism’s Layer 2.  Optimistic rollups are optimistic, in the sense that no computations are made on layer 2 of Optimism and every transaction is taken as valid.
 The system runs fraud proofing to check the transaction, if it suspects any fraud.  Recently in June, Optimizr released a Bedrock upgrade to its OP stack, bringing a number of improvements to its mainnet, including reduced transaction  fees and increased Ethereum equivalents.  Now let’s quickly present how Optimism governance looks like.
 Optimism runs as a collective and has a dual entity running its governance.  The token house and the citizens house are two of these faces.  The Optimism collective has a lofty objective objective to balance the incentive of making a profit with the incentive of doing good.  Current incentive programs between these two elements, according to the Collective, are not well aligned.
 The citizen’s house has a higher purpose because of this.  This includes casting a vote on issues that support a closer connection between impact and profit. In other words, the citizens house makes  funding decisions for public goods that reward doing good. The token house, on the  other hand, is in charge of making votes on technical matters.
 Voting on upcoming  improvements, problems, and the like is one of these. By the way, this dual  governance strategy is still in the proposal stage and is not yet fully operational.  The governance token of the Optimism Network is called Optimism Token, in short OP. It  is used to power the Optimism Collective by building a beneficial and user-friendly ecosystem.
 The OP token contains value  for token holders, is used to reward developers, contributors, and users  through airdrops and grants. In conclusion, Optimism has quickly become  one of the most popular Ethereum scaling solutions. It is a special project that  lays the foundation for projects with significant social impact, but no viable business model.
 It is supported by a strong team, a sizable community, and a group of devoted  investors. The performance of the various Layer 2 solutions will be closely watched in the coming  years as the competition between Optimistic Roll-Ups and ZK Roll-Ups intensifies. There is  little doubt that OP will achieve its goal of dominating layer  2 scaling for Ethereum, much sooner than anticipated.
