Monitoring Crypto Wallets: Sonar & Step

In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance (DeFi), keeping track of your various wallets and portfolio values can feel overwhelming. This lesson will guide you through the process of efficiently monitoring your digital assets across different platforms. Understanding how to track your crypto holdings is not only crucial for personal finance management, but it also lays the groundwork for future exploration into the expansive realm of blockchain and its myriad possibilities—perfectly aligned with your journey in the Crypto is FIRE (CFIRE) training program.

Core Concepts

As you delve into the intricacies of crypto wallet management, here are some essential terms that will bring clarity:

  1. Portfolio Tracker

    • Traditional Finance: A tool or application used to monitor the performance of an investment portfolio, including stocks, bonds, and assets.
    • Crypto World: Similar tools in cryptocurrency that allow you to check the values and performance of various crypto assets held in different wallets.
    • Importance: Grasping this concept enables you to streamline your asset monitoring, ensuring you stay updated on your financial standing in the dynamic crypto market.
  2. Wallet Address

    • Traditional Finance: The equivalent would be account numbers used for banking purposes.
    • Crypto World: A unique string of characters representing a wallet that can send or receive cryptocurrency.
    • Importance: Understanding wallet addresses is fundamental, as they are the gateways to your assets, enabling you to manage and transfer cryptocurrencies securely.
  3. Decentralized Finance (DeFi)

    • Traditional Finance: Refers to traditional financial services including banking, loans, and insurance.
    • Crypto World: DeFi represents an umbrella of financial services built on blockchain technology, allowing users to lend, borrow, and trade without intermediaries.
    • Importance: Grasping the DeFi landscape gives you insight into a revolutionary shift in how financial services operate, emphasizing the need for effective tracking of your wallets to maximize opportunities.
  4. Liquidity

    • Traditional Finance: The ease with which an asset can be converted into cash.
    • Crypto World: Refers to the availability of tokens in a trading pool to facilitate transactions.
    • Importance: Understanding liquidity helps you navigate trading environments, especially when considering how quickly you can buy or sell crypto assets.
  5. Transaction Fees

    • Traditional Finance: Fees charged by banks for processing transactions.
    • Crypto World: The costs incurred for executing transactions on a blockchain network.
    • Importance: Knowing how transaction fees are structured in crypto can save you money and optimize your trading strategies.
  6. NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens)

    • Traditional Finance: Think of collectibles or unique assets that cannot be multiplied; that’s your equivalent.
    • Crypto World: NFTs represent ownership of unique digital items using blockchain.
    • Importance: Understanding NFTs broadens your investment horizon and connects you with emerging digital asset trends.
  7. Decentralized Applications (dApps)

    • Traditional Finance: Standard applications used in finance.
    • Crypto World: dApps operate on a blockchain, providing services or functionalities without centralized control.
    • Importance: Familiarizing yourself with dApps is essential as they become the backbone of many crypto-related services, including wallet tracking.

Monitor Your Crypto Wallets

To help you understand how to keep track of your wallets and manage your crypto assets, let’s break it down into three main sections:

1. Setting Up Portfolio Trackers

  • Open dApps like Step.Finance and Sonar.watch to monitor your portfolios.
  • You can connect your crypto wallet or manually input your wallet address for tracking.

Detailed Explanation: These applications provide a comprehensive view of your assets and their current values. By connecting your wallet, you gain insights into your portfolio’s performance—along with transaction history and real-time valuation. If you’re using both platforms, note that they may not display identical data, so utilizing both can be advantageous.

2. Analyzing Your Wallet Performance

  • Check the net worth of various wallet addresses; for example, the different values of your crypto holdings like SOL, USDC, or tokens from liquidity pools.
  • Pay attention to transaction history for clarity on your trading actions.

Detailed Explanation: By assessing your overall net worth across multiple addresses, you can evaluate how well your investments are performing. The transaction histories can guide your decision-making, whether to hold, sell, or adjust your strategies moving forward. Keeping tabs on performance isn’t just useful; it’s essential for any serious investor.

3. Closing Unused Accounts

  • If you have tokens or accounts you’re no longer interested in, use the tracker tools to close those accounts and reclaim the SOL associated with them.
  • Utilize transaction features to manage your assets effectively.

Detailed Explanation: Just as a traditional investor would consolidate assets for efficiency, so too can you by eliminating neglected token accounts. For instance, if you come across low-value tokens in your portfolio, closing the accounts will help you focus your resources on more promising assets.

4. Managing NFTs and Points

  • Use Sonar.watch features to evaluate NFTs and potential points eligibility for different DeFi applications.
  • Ensure you distinguish real NFTs from potential scams.

Detailed Explanation: NFTs represent an interesting and novel aspect of the crypto world. Understanding their value and potential market can open new avenues for investment, allowing you to make informed choices. It’s essential to always vet your sources to avoid scams or misleading investments.

Crypto Wallets

  • Traditional wallets and accounts function similarly as gateways to manage assets; however, blockchain technology excludes intermediaries, thus enhancing security and removing barriers.
  • For example, dApps such as Radium and Orca showcase how transactions occur seamlessly in the crypto environment compared to traditional financial systems laden with fees and time delays.

Real-World Applications

Historical context tells us that asset management has always been vital. The rise of tech-driven finance mirrors the evolution of online banking, where tracking assets became crucial. Throughout this evolution, digital wallets have emerged, offering unprecedented transparency and control over one’s finances. With tools like Step.Finance and Sonar.watch, you aren’t just observers; you’re active participants in this new financial paradigm.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite the advantages of managing crypto wallets, challenges abound:

  • Market Volatility: The crypto market can swing wildly, making it hard to keep tabs on your wallet values effectively.
  • Data Overload: A plethora of platforms may lead to information paralysis.

Solutions:

  • Use a limited number of well-vetted dApps to streamline your tracking process.
  • Set alerts or notifications for significant changes in asset performance to stay informed without being overwhelmed.

Key Takeaways

  • Efficiently monitor your crypto portfolio using dApps to keep track of wallet performance.
  • Ensure you manage unused tokens to reclaim funds and reduce clutter.
  • Understand the fundamental concepts of liquidity and transaction fees for informed decision-making.
  • Grasp the nuances of NFTs to explore new investment avenues.
  • Maintain security by being vigilant of scams while managing assets digitally.

Discussion Questions and Scenarios

  1. How does the ease of use of crypto portfolio trackers compare to traditional financial portfolio management applications?
  2. Contrast the implications of liquidity in traditional finance versus the crypto world.
  3. Discuss how transaction fees in crypto can affect your trading strategy compared to traditional brokerage fees.
  4. Imagine you’ve decided to close unused crypto accounts; what considerations would you take into account before doing so?
  5. Consider the role of NFTs in the crypto space; what implications could they have for traditional asset classes in the future?
  6. How might you educate someone new to crypto about the dangers of scams when managing their portfolio?
  7. If a market crash occurred, what strategies would you employ to protect your assets compared to traditional investment methods?

As we start again to DeFi, I want to show you how you can actually monitor different portfolio values of different wallets.  So let’s go, as per normal, to dupe.ag and into the middle.  Let’s come up to the logo and then welcome to Solana.  I’m going to be showing you two different dApps.  Let’s click get started and also, as per normal, scroll on down to explore Solana and explore Solana apps.
Click on DeFi.  We’ve got two here that I want to open. Finance I’m going to open this one and we’re also going to open up sonar.watch we’ll  open this one so these are portfolio trackers let’s click on see your portfolio at step.finance  and then we can either connect our wallet connect and Solflare and then connect or alternatively we can take our address  or any address there is such as this one and then we can go back and we can just paste it in push  enter and we can watch this address and see what the net worth of this particular address is so we
can see with this address there’s some soul and usC in concentrated liquidity. And if we want to check our other address, we’ll just go and find that one there. This one here, GTD. Go and paste that one  in. Push enter. And we can see the net worth is a little bit more. So we have some Sol.
We’ve got  some Duke. We’ve got some USDC. And we’ve got some liquidity. We’ve got some WIF and Sol in Meteora.  Concentrated liquidity with Radium and orca and some volts with camino now  let’s go to sonar.watch and check this one out as well we’ll paste this one in push enter it’s  calculating our net worth so we can see our net worth here is 584 dollars with step.
finance it  says 545. they don’t all show all of the different dApps that you’re using. So personally, I like to use both.  We can see Camino here, this one, Radium, Meteora, Orca, and this one also shows Cropper Finance.  If you own any NFTs, you’ll see the value of the NFTs also in here.  Unfortunately, other than this one, this one, and this one, which are legitimate NFTs relating to DeFi,  all of these ones, they’re all scam nfts  so remember not to visit these websites i’ll cover another tutorial what to do with them
sonar.watch also has this feature if you click on points it will load your wallet versus different  databases to work out which ones are actually eligible for any points it takes a minute or so  we can see we have some points with dbridge. We’ve got some  points with camino. Nothing with solend. Nothing with in fact any of them.
Just this one and this  one. Now we’ll go back to step.finance. This has plenty of cool different features. One thing is  transaction history. We can see the recent transaction history in a very clean way. We can  see this also on block explorers but this offers it a little bit  easier to read.
Also if I want to go ahead and actually close my wallet so we can disconnect  like this. Connect. Soulflare again and connect. If I have any empty accounts over on this side I  can click on accounts and if I had any I could close them and regain some Solana. I’ll show you what I mean. So dog  with hat I’ve got a little bit of this.
If I wanted to go and take my dog with hat token and just sell  it for Solana it’s not going to give me very much of course but I’ll go and swap that confirm it  and I’m selling all of my with. Now if I scroll on down it says dog with hat zero balance come back here let’s reconnect our wallet of  course connect we can now see in the account section we can actually close the token account  for with so if we don’t plan on buying anymore or trading anymore or doing anything with this token  we can claim back the solana if you use step.finance step charges a five percent fee for the service
and all you have to do is just click on close and then you’ll see we get this Solana back, approve  and just like that we’ve got more Sol  and if we hop into our wallet, scroll on down  we don’t have the WIF token anymore.  Of course if we buy WIF again in the future  we’ll just create the token again  and it’ll be funded with Sol.
So that’s how you use Step.Finance and Sonar.watch  to help keep track on your portfolio.  That’s all for this tutorial and we’ll cover plenty more DeFi stuff in future tutorials.
